COUNSELLING AND TRAUMA ADVISOR

Based at COYCHURCH in Bridgend South Wales.

“The work of police officers and staff routinely exposes them to the sorts of traumatic events that the general population would rarely encounter – violent assaults, sudden fatalities, road accidents, murder, body recovery etc. as well as the regular tensions and confrontations inherent in operational policing.”

As part of the multidisciplinary Occupational Health Safety and Wellbeing team, you will enhance the provision of comprehensive counselling and trauma support services for the circa 6,000 police officers and police staff employed by South Wales Police.

Not only will you provide time limited 1:1 counselling and support, you will also refer clients to approved external counselling providers and other specialists. You will be qualified to Post Graduate counselling qualification to level seven or above with a minimum of two years supervised counselling practice, with over 450 hours of counselling experience ( post qualification). You will be able to demonstrate that your practice has been supervised in line with the Ethical Guidelines of BACP, BPS or similar professional body.

You will have an understanding of the human response to stress and trauma and a working knowledge of Post Traumatic Incident interventions plus a willingness to undergo further training in this area.

You will also have the confidence to develop, prepare and deliver electronic presentations to all levels of staff throughout South Wales Police.

As you will be supporting operational policing, you may on occasions be required to work outside normal office hours. You will be happy working on your own and reacting to changing priorities at a moments notice.  Lone working, exposure to the effects of trauma in police officers and description of incidents which requires personal resilience and clinical supervision.

You will need a full driving licence and access to your own transport as you may be required to attend at various locations throughout the South Wales Police area.

This post is suitable for job share/part time workers subject to exigencies of the business.
